Katherine L. Garrett
Katia Garrett is a consultant supporting public interest and social justice nonprofits. She has had a long career in public service, public interest law, and alternative dispute resolution, including as a federal court law clerk, a trial lawyer specializing in civil rights and employment cases, and as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Chief of Staff in the US Department of Justice Office of Policy Development. Ms. Garrett served as the first Executive Director of the DC Circuit’s Task Force on Gender, Race, and Ethnic Bias, the first official study of the role that race and ethnicity play in the work and work life of the federal courts, and the second such study of gender Ms. Garrett has taught as an adjunct at the Washington College of Law at American University and George Washington University Law School, and currently at Howard University Law School. Her community service includes terms as the President and Board member of the Washington Council of Lawyers, the Chair of the DC Circuit Judicial Conference Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services, the Board of the National Association of IOLTA Programs, and Complaint Examiner for the DC Office of Police Complaints.
