The Europe and Middle East Region of the IAWJ is growing in its activities and membership. Early associations were established in Ireland and Italy, with the Italian Association hosting the IAWJ’s 2nd Biennial International Conference in 1994. In 2011, one of the newest associations – the Hungarian Association of Women Judges – hosted the 2011 regional meeting for Europe and the Middle East. The IAWJ’s 11th Biennial Conference was held in London, UK, hosted by the UKAWJ in May 2012.
The IAWJ is pleased to have a growing number of members from the Middle East, and our membership includes women judges from such countries as Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Abu Dhabi, and North Cyprus. In 2005-2006, the IAWJ implemented judicial programs in Jordan. We continue to encourage the appointment of women to the judiciaries in the region.
One of the largest current projects of the IAWJ is a three-year project funded by the MDG3 Fund of the Netherlands. That project – Ending the Abuse of Power through Sexual Exploitation: Naming, Shaming and Ending Sextorion – has been implemented by the IAWJ and its partner associations in the Philippines, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Tanzania.
