First Woman Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa

The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) is thrilled to announce the historic appointment of its esteemed member and Vice President, Mandisa Maya, as the first woman Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa. Her appointment takes effect on September 1, 2024.

Justice Maya's exceptional judicial career and proven leadership make her an outstanding choice for this prestigious role. Her extensive experience in various courts, including her leadership of the Supreme Court of Appeal and her current position as Deputy Chief Justice, has fully prepared her to lead South Africa's judiciary.

The IAWJ extends its warmest congratulations to Chief Justice Maya and wishes her continued success in this groundbreaking role.
