30 September 2022 Attack on Education Centre in Kabul

On Friday 30 September 2022, the Kaaj Education Centre in the Afghanistan neighbourhood of Dascht-e-Barchi, Kabul, was the target of a deadly suicide bombing. At the time the centre was largely occupied by 18 to 24 year old Hazara young women, preparing for university entrance examinations. It is estimated that more than 50 have been killed and over 100 wounded.

This bombing represents a heinous attack on both the Hazara minority population in Afghanistan and on women and girls exercising their right to an education. The IAWJ strongly condemns the attacks and extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of all those killed and injured.

The 30 September bombing is just one of many recent egregious instances of violence  towards Hazara. On 8 May 2021, a similar attack targeted mostly Hazara girls at Sayed Ul‑Shuhada High School in Kabul, killing 85 and leaving nearly 150 wounded. The IAWJ passed a resolution to condemn this heinous act of violence during our 2021 Biennial Conference in Auckland, New Zealand. In the past year, there have been at least 13 attacks against Hazara communities, killing more than 700 people.

The IAWJ calls for meaningful measures to be taken to protect the Hazara community  and to promote the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, including their right to education.
