The Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa, the Hon. Mandisa Maya, was profiled by Duke Law Magazine. Hon. Justice Maya is also a Regional Director of Sub-Sahara Africa within IAWJ International Board of Directors.
Justice Mandisa Maya practiced as an advocate until her elevation to the bench in 1999. She has sat in various divisions of the High Court and the Labour Courts before advancing to the Appellate Court and has acted as a judge in the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the Supreme Court of Namibia and the Appeal Court of Lesotho. Justice Mandisa Maya became the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2015 and the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2017. She was the first woman to hold the positions of Deputy President and President of the Supreme Court of Appeal.
